Product Description
HOW DID THE POPE REACT TO THE FASCIST DICTATORS?
THE RESPONSE BY POPE PIUS XII to the Fascist dictators Hitler and Mussolini and his reaction to the Holocaust have long been the subject of controversy and division. Questions about what and when the Pope knew about the atrocities against Jews and others and what he did or did not do about it have been debated for many years. This major work by Pulitzer Prize-winning author David I. Kertzer addresses those issues - and the moral leadership of the Church comes under disturbing scrutiny.
- Pope Pius's archives were finally opened in 2020 and Kertzer, one of the world's top Vatican scholars, set to work studying thousands of previously unseen documents, his research indicating that preserving the power of the Church was uppermost in Vatican thinking at that time. Critics have lavished praise on this book, noting that it makes clear the church's reaction to the evil deeds of Hitler and Mussolini.
