The great Ward Bond, the charismatic Wagon Master, succumbed to illness and passed away part-way through the season. Undeterred, the determined travelers and their guides continued on their way with a new leader, Christopher Hale, played by John McIntire, and a new guide Denny Miller, who joined Wooster and Bill Hawks as they escorted their passengers on their perilous journey to California.
